Govt urged to investigate reported uranium mining activity in Papua |
|
Thursday, 15 July 2010 |

The government should immediately form a team to investigate allegations that US-based PT Freeport Indonesia is mining uranium in Papua, a legislator said.
Chairman of the United Development Party (PPP) faction in the House of Representatives (DPR), Hazrul Azwar, said here on Thursday, "It is necessary for the government to immediately form a special investigation team to check the truth of allegations that PT Freeport Indonesia is mining uranium in Papua."
He said if it was true that there was uranium mining in Papua, the
government should revoke or revise its contract with PT Freeport so that
it also covered uranium mining.
"If the allegations about uranium mining by PT Freeport Indonesia are
true, it means the company has violated its contract with the government
because the permit given to the company was to mine gold, iron ore, and
copper," Hazrul said.
Besides, he said, the government should review the contract with PT
Freeport Indonesia or else it would "certainly have a negative impact on
state revenue."
Hazrul also asked House`s Commission-VII to form a team to follow up the
report on uranium mining which came from a member of the Papua
Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD).
"We hope the House`s Commission-VII will conduct an investigation into
the case," Hazrul said.
Meanwhile, House`s Commission-VII member Sayta Yudha said that if there
was a mining activity that was outside the work contract with the
government, that activity was illegal.
"If it is true that PT Freeport Indonesia is also mining uranium in
Papua, the company should stop its activity because uranium is not
included in its work contract with the government," Sayta Yudha said.
He also asked PT Freeport to make a clarification about the alleged
uranium mining information, and the government should also proactively
follow up the information by forming a technical team to investigate it.
